Other Characters: N/A
Name: Sentinel Prime
From: Transformers: Animated
Appearance: Sentinel in Earth-truck format
Age: Translating robot age to human age, I'd say late 20s/early 30s.
Gender: Male (Or at least as male as you can get when you're a giant robot)
Personality: Sentinel is, in a word, a jerk. Tactless, rigid, self-absorbed and unflaggingly arrogant, he has a talent for irritating pretty much everyone he comes in contact with. He is reckless and impulsive, acting first and considering the consequences later, if at all. If something should go wrong, even if it’s his own fault (and it usually is), he will immediately find someone else to point the finger at because he is effectively incapable of admitting that he was wrong. Although he prefers not to be contradicted when singing his own praises, he does enjoy a good argument. As long as he ends up winning it. If he does find himself completely and utterly checkmated, he is capable of humbling himself enough to accept some responsibility for his actions, and even offer an apology. But you can tell he hates having to do it. A complete slave to the needs of his massive and easily bruised ego, he expends an amazing amount of effort on trying to make himself look good, usually by trying to make others look bad. He is the type to hold grudges for entirely too long, has made an art form out of denial, and would much rather get angry at the things that upset him than let himself experience any unpleasant emotions or feelings of vulnerability.
Believe it or not, Sentinel does have some good qualities. They just tend to be completely overshadowed by the fact that he is a jerk. He’s brave (with a few notable exceptions), and idealistically devoted to the notion of being part of the ‘great Autobot machine’. He enjoys being part of a team, though his demanding nature doesn’t make him particularly good at it. If he mellowed out a bit, he would actually make a pretty good leader. And he does demonstrate some ability to learn from his mistakes (albeit slowly), and grow past them over time. But newfound maturity aside, he's still a jerk.
Backstory: Sentinel trained at the Autobot Academy and was a classmate and friend of Elita-1 and Optimus, also sharing a friendly rivalry with the latter. Despite Sentinel being something of a maverick who frequently relied on Optimus to pull his aft out of the proverbial fire when his plans went awry, all three were successful as cadets and seemed destined for a bright future in the Elite Guard. Ultimately and surprisingly, Sentinel was the only one who made it.
The end of their little trio began when Sentinel heard about an abandoned spaceship stocked with valuable energon cubes and marooned on an organic planet. Ignoring Command's ban on Autobots visiting such worlds, he got it in his head to go there and claim the ‘energon-y goodness’ for himself. Despite Optimus’s misgivings, Sentinel dragged both him and Elita along for the adventure. And it turned out to be more adventure than any of them had bargained for when they were attacked by a pack of hostile and dangerous spider-creatures. Adding insult to injury, their skirmish with the spiders triggered the unstable energon to explode. As the three of them were trying to escape the impending blast, Elita fell back into the doomed ship and Optimus elected to save Sentinel rather than risk going back for her. By the time they were away from the ship and able to pull together some sort of a rescue effort, Elita’s energy signature was gone, meaning that she had, presumably, been killed.
Devastated by Elita's death, Sentinel blamed the entire fiasco on Optimus. Facing disciplinary action from their superiors at the Academy, Sentinel stuck to his story that Optimus was to blame, beginning a long-running campaign to ruin his former friend’s reputation. Optimus, as the senior cadet, took full responsibility for Sentinel's actions. He was consequently expelled from the Academy and barred from service in the Elite Guard. Sentinel escaped the tribunal with little more than a slap on the wrist and resumed his training - without his two closest friends and with a newfound appreciation for rules and protocol.
After graduating from the Academy, Sentinel was promoted to the rank of Minor and assigned a position as drill instructor at an Autobot training camp. He generally enjoyed his work. After all, it gave him free license to yell, berate, and boss everyone around. But he could have lived without the part that involved being randomly abused and humiliated by the wacky antics of his bumbling recruits. Many of his trainees didn't make the cut. Wasp was ousted after being accused of spying for the Decepticons. Bumblebee was commended for discovering the traitor, then given the boot after admitting to dropping a tower on Sentinel during a training exercise. And Bulkhead was busted down to space bridge repair duty, not that he minded it any. Although Sentinel was promoted out of his instructing job and ended up working directly under the command of Ultra Magnus, he was later ordered by Magnus himself to personally manage the training of experimental flying Autobot twins Jetfire and Jetstorm. His first response was to complain about having effectively been demoted. And the care and training of flying Autobots turned out to be even more of a hazard than teaching the ground-bound variety.
Sentinel crossed paths with Optimus again when Optimus came across the legendary Allspark and subsequently disappeared with it on Earth. Both Optimus and his ship were presumed lost, and it wasn't until several years later that the Elite Guard decided to mount an investigative mission to Earth in hopes of recovering the Allspark. Ultra Magnus led the mission personally, accompanied by Sentinel - now his second-in-command - and the special ops Cyber-Ninja Jazz. Earth, much to Sentinel's dismay, was populated by disgusting little organic life-forms, and the Elite Guard team quickly discovered that the Allspark had been blown apart and the fragments scattered. Sentinel predictably blamed Optimus, and spent the rest of his visit browbeating him and his team for botching the management of something so incredibly important. But karma can be quite a nasty thing, and struck back with a vengeance in the form of a series of humiliating dings to his ego that included being told by Magnus that he could stand to learn a few things from Optimus, having his head removed and his body hijacked by the criminal Headmaster, and generally being proven wrong time and time again. By the time the Elite Guard completed their work and returned to Cybertron, Sentinel was more than fed up with Earth and everyone on it.
Unfortunately for Sentinel, he was ordered back to Earth shortly thereafter, in pursuit of the escaped convict Wasp. He brought the twins with him, who were, to put it mildly, more than a little excited about being allowed out into the field. His escalating feud with Optimus also made apprehending Wasp a more difficult task than it had to be, as they spent more time arguing with one another and less actually doing their jobs. But it proved to be all for naught when the truth came out - Wasp had never been a spy at all, and the real traitor had been working as a mole for years under the guise of Longarm Prime, head of Autobot Intelligence. Sentinel, unconvinced of this and unwilling to admit that he might have been wrong about Wasp in the first place, insisted on continuing to pursue the fugitive and at the very least subject him to formal questioning.
Deciding to make the most of his time on Earth while continuing the hunt for Wasp, Sentinel took it upon himself to start rounding up the Decepticons that Optimus's team had failed to adequately deal with. Of course, that was easier said than done. So following his usual(ly questionable) decision-making processes, he made contact with the bounty hunter Lockdown and struck a deal with the devil: parts from his own ship in exchange for the capture of the Decepticons. True to form, Sentinel kept this arrangement a secret and tried to take all the credit for the captures. Unsurprisingly, he was found out, and the situation fell apart when Lockdown double-crossed him. Once the dust had settled, a thoroughly annoyed Optimus agreed not to inform Sentinel’s superiors of his actions, but wouldn’t let him take credit for the captures either. Sentinel actually deigned to thank Optimus for covering for him, but Optimus was having none of it and promised that, once the Decepticons were taken care of and everything was back to normal, they would have it out.
[And this is where I'll be pulling him from, since denying him some of what happens in canon next will make for more interesting CR.]
Moral Standing: Good. Bad-tempered and often ethically questionable, but still good. Actually, the best description I can think of for his moral standing would be, to borrow D&D terminology, Lawful Neutral. He seeks order and abhors chaos. And though self-serving, he does behave with the interest of the greater good in mind...he's just sometimes a bit off on what the interest of the greater good actually is. Usually his motives are not as much a problem as his methods, as he tends to let the ends justify the means.
Dreams: Sentinel's greatest dream is what it always has been: to be successful, and to be in charge. He aspires to being a respected and revered leader - ultimately, to becoming the Autobot Supreme Commander.
Fears: Sentinel harbors a great deal of unresolved post-traumatic stress relating to the incident with the spiders and the loss of Elita-1 that has over time evolved into a full-fledged phobia of all things organic. Rather than admit fear, he prefers to complain that organic life is dirty and disgusting. Quite possibly the only thing that scares Sentinel more than organics is being wrong.
Extra: A couple of fun facts about Sentinel:
- His character design is heavily based on that of The Tick. His chin is therefore the stuff of legends. But mention it to his face at your own peril.
- Just because you're a truck does not mean you're necessarily a good driver. Sentinel pays little attention to the rules of the road, and has a really hard time operating in inclement weather.

Writing Sample: Prior to this, I played Sentinel for about two years at LJ's Cape and Cowl. Bear in mind when reading that he was stuck in a human body for the majority of that time - an unfortunate predicament for someone who's phobic of organic life...
